In 1978 Hoboken was starting to change. It was a hard working New Jersey port city directly across from Manhattan. It had fallen on hard times for many decades. People were leaving for the suburbs and tenement dwellers were being forced out. A suspicious tenement fire had killed many people across from my Grandfather’s Italian-American club. We decided to document the “Gentrification of Hoboken” in 1978. The story appeared in the NY Times in 1979.
