Dutch Television 1980s

The 1980’s witnessed a huge change in American society. The murder of John Lennon in December 1979 and the inauguration of Ronald Reagan heralded the rise of traditional conservative political and moral values.

The advent of CNN 24 hour news changed how people received their news. It was time for me to shift my focus to TV news.  I became a news producer for Avro Dutch Television and worked in tandem with their correspondent Fons van Westerloo and cameraman Kees Colson.  We reported on most of the big stories of the 80’s.

While reporting on the Reagan Revolution, the rise of Evangelical TV, reparations for interned Japanese -Americans during WW11 and the presidential campaigns I learned more about my country because I saw it through the prism of other peoples eyes. Although I was producing 8-10minute news packages I always had my camera with me and never stopped photographing.
